A cutting from an unknown newspaper of unknown date said:
Fleet Engineer William Glasspole, retired, who died at Waterlooville, near Portsmouth, yesterday, in his 98th year, is believed to have been the oldest officer of the British Navy. He entered Woolwich Dockyard for training 84 years ago, in 1846, and went through the Crimean War and the Abyssinian campaign, accompanying Lord Napier to Magdala. He was a shipmate of the late Lord Fisher on the Warrior.
